Obsidian is a dark purple and black block, known for its high blast resistance (meaning it can only blow up by Withers, or if 562 blocks of TNT is surrounding the obsidian). Obsidian is used to make Nether Portals.

Obsidian is used to make Nether Portals.

Obsidian is used in a few crafting recipes.

Obsidian is used to make a safe house, since it's immune to TNT and Creepers.

Naturally forming obsidian when a waterfall flows onto a lava pool.

Obsidian can be found naturally underground when a waterfall flows onto a lava pool. When you mine it, it can be very dangerous. See Tutorials/Mining/Obsidian for more details.

Lava and WaterEdit

If you don't want to go down into caves, you can make obsidian on the surface. Here's how: Make sure you have a water bucket! First, find an above-ground lava pool. These are quite rare. When you have found one, get your water bucket out. Now, put the water next to the lava pit. Now recollect the water. You should have a whole pool of obsidian now! Note: When mining obsidian anywhere, be sure to keep that water bucket handy; there might be more lava underneath the obsidian.

The EndEdit

End pillarsEdit

End pillars are those tall obsidian towers. Mining them can be dangerous, because of the Enderdragon.

End spawn platformEdit

The platform in the End that you spawn on is made of obsidian. Note: There might be void under the obsidian, so be careful

Pocket EditionEdit

The only way to get obsidian is from the Nether Reactor, since the world is tiny and there is only about a 07% chance you'll spawn in a world with lava in it.
